Project Story

Burnside was retained by The Town of Wasaga Beach to complete a Schedule B Municipal Class Environmental Assessment to consider solutions that address current and projected increases in traffic volume as well as to improve road and intersection geometrics of Veterans Way and Klondike Park Road.

Coordination with two Provincial Ministry Class Environmental Assessment processes, including the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry’s Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves, and Infrastructure Ontario’s Public Work Class Environmental Assessment process, was necessary for road improvements that required the disposition of land from the boundary of the Wasaga Beach Provincial Park.

The Municipal Class EA included public and agency consultation and engagement with nearby Indigenous communities. Terrestrial habitat assessment, cultural heritage, and archaeological assessments were completed, among other studies, to identify potential impacts of the project and develop mitigation measures, which incorporated a wildlife crossing designed for reptiles, including Species at Risk.

The project included the detailed design for geometric road improvements that provided a safer road corridor and intersection at Veterans Way and Klondike Park Road. The project also included the installation of a trunk watermain that will improve water service throughout the community.
