Simcoe County Road 93 Roundabout

Burnside was retained by the County of Simcoe (County) for the County Road 93 multi-use trail and roundabout design project. The trail provides a key active transportation link connecting the two Towns of Midland & Penetanguishene. The roundabout is the first ever constructed by the County and improves safety at the County Road 93 and Vinden Street | Golf Link Road intersection.

This project included detailed design, property acquisition, utility relocate coordination, tender preparation, and contract administration and construction inspection for the construction of 5.5 km of multi-use trail, pavement and shoulder widening, drainage improvements, and upgrades to roadside safety on County Road 93.

In addition to the trail and road scope, the project included a roundabout at the intersection of Vinden Street and Golf Link Road, a concrete box structure on the Columbus Municipal Drain, retaining walls, and handrails. Our team provided construction administration for this scope item, including inspection and construction administration addressing issues of quantity payment, design compliance and traffic staging.

The construction of the roundabout presented a significant challenge for traffic management. Our team was able to prepare traffic staging drawings with temporary traffic signals to allow County Road 93 to remain open at all times while only closing one local road at a time. The construction of the roundabout was completed well ahead of schedule and under budget through creative construction staging and a cooperative team approach with the County, Towns, consultant, and the contractor, resulting in a safe and efficient means of travel along this road segment.
