Bob Burnside developed our firms founding values and practices that have formed the cornerstone of our company culture since it was founded in 1970. These values are non-negotiable principles that guide decision making and that provide a framework in which to operate. Our values express what is important to us and will shape our organization into the future. We are very pleased to share with you one example, out of many, in which our employees are living out these values and practices.
It is our honour to announce that Burnside’s very own Ron Alkema was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, and appointee as the Commanding Officer of the 48th Highlanders of Canada on Friday October 12, 2018. We were fortunate to have a number of Burnside staff attend the parade.
The 48th Highlanders of Canada is a Canadian Forces Primary Reserve infantry regiment, formed in 1891, parading out of the Moss Park Armoury in Toronto. This regiment has a longstanding tradition of participation in the life of its parent city of Toronto in community functions, and in fulfilling its operational duties around the world. Since its inception, the men and women of the regiment have been among the first Canadians to step forward and answer their nation’s call.
After graduating high school, Ron was unsure what he wanted to do with his life. Upon the recommendation of his father he decided to join the army. Little did he know then how this experience would shape his life. His military education and training have served him well in the army, as well as in his civilian life. As a young soldier Ron learned the value of relationships, the importance of accountability and leadership skills that have shaped him into the man he is today.
Having been around the world, deployed to Germany, Cyprus, Sierra Leone, and Afghanistan and having interacted with people of all walks of life, Ron has learned that people of all cultures are very similar, that we all just want the best for ourselves and our families – and he understands as well as anyone, how fortunate we are to live in Canada.
LCol Alkema has also received the Chief of Defense Staff Commendation award for his work as a military advisor to the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces specifically for revising the training and operational rotation for “3 Brigade”, which was subsequently adopted by the entire Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.
We are very fortunate and honoured to have Ron as part of our Burnside family and to be able to share his story with our staff as well as with our fellow Canadians through the 48th Highlanders of Canada.
Congratulations Ron! We are all proud of you!
