David Bannister, P.Eng.

Executive Vice President, Public Sector

My Role and Responsibilities

My fascination with buildings, bridges and landscaping began at an early age and led me to earn an engineering degree in my hometown of Windsor, Ontario. I became a hydrotechnical engineering specialist and have worked on projects throughout Canada and internationally.

Key projects in my career have included the design of stormwater management facilities for major highways and land developments, including 17 km of Highway 407 and more than half of the 45 km² of Mississauga’s Erin Mills neighbourhoods. Additionally, I served as the hydrotechnical lead on the Master Plan for twinning the York-Durham Sewage System that services over 1 million people, and I have been a longtime advisor to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks for basement flooding claims. My creativity and passion for forging new ideas produced unique design solutions, a few of which earned notable awards from organizations such as the Ontario Public Works Association.

My Interests and Hobbies

I am fortunate to have been guided by excellent mentors who shaped my perspective and understanding of not only engineering, but the business of engineering. Although one of my ongoing roles at Burnside is Senior Hydrotechnical Advisor, much of my time is focused on risk management and contracts review. Having been Chair of Consulting Engineers of Ontario and a longstanding member of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies Ontario Business Practices Committee, I have gained a unique perspective and understanding of our business, which has allowed me to provide mentorship and guidance to both coworkers and clients.
