The Government of Barbados retained Burnside to develop, design and implement a number of components of their solid waste management program including two new landfill sites and a state-of-the-art facility which comprises a sorting and transfer station, composting plant and chemical waste storage facility.
Mangrove Pond and National Sanitary Landfill
To successfully implement the Integrated Solid Waste Program, the Mangrove Pond landfill was expanded with a designed capacity of 725,000 m3. Cell 1 of the new National Sanitary Landfill provides 715,000 m3 capacity. Future development of the National Sanitary Landfill will provide an additional 3,280,000 m3 of capacity.
Solid Waste Management Centre at Vaucluse: Sorting and Transfer Station, Composting and Chemical Waste Storage Facilities
Burnside developed a site works tender to construct essential roads, grading and stormwater management infrastructure. In a second stage, Burnside developed Request for Proposal (RFP) documents for the design, construction and operation of the facility. The facility is expected to receive 600 to 1,000 tonnes of waste per day, with an ultimate capacity for 1,300 tonnes per day.
Burnside continues to work with the Government of Barbados on technical issues related to the contract for the facility.
The Integrated Solid Waste Programme provides the Government of Barbados with a practical, environmentally sound and economical means of managing solid waste on the island.
