“I chose to apply for a co-op at Burnside because I knew that it would provide me with a valuable, hands on experience where I could apply what I learned in school into real situations. During my first week, I knew it was a place where I would be constantly learning and gaining excellent work experience. I worked on multiple projects, communicated with fellow staff daily, shared ideas and made lasting connections.
“The people here really are what make the difference and I would recommend any student or recent grad to apply to role at Burnside, and you will see that the difference is their people.”
Rachel Lesperance – Human Resources Co-op Student

Daniel Koetsier sums up Burnside’s approach by noting “When you challenge co-op students and view them as an investment, you’re going to get a more loyal employee that has experience and knowledge”.
“While working for Burnside, I gained invaluable experience which will assist me in school and in my future career. I was able to apply concepts learned in university to solve real world engineering problems. Being an environmental engineering student, I have a strong interest in water and wastewater projects. While supporting Burnside’s team of professional engineers on the design and construction administration of these projects, everyone took the time to teach me and ensure I learned and understood everything. Furthermore, I was exposed to a variety of engineering disciplines which allowed me to expand my knowledge outside of my university program. It was also interesting to assist in writing community development plans for multiple First Nations across Canada.
“Burnside allows co-op students to have unique learning experiences unlike any other employer. I was given many responsibilities in the office, and Matt also took me to a First Nations community in Alberta for 2 weeks in order to gain experience on site, at one of our water system infrastructure projects. It was inspiring to know that we were helping this community and its members to receive safe drinking water for the next few decades. It was very fulfilling to see that our hard work was making a difference in people’s lives. It was also fascinating to see the construction of this project in person after previously looking at the drawings and design. This was an unforgettable experience in which I learned so much, and I am extremely thankful for the opportunity.
“Burnside’s motto is ‘The Difference is Our People.’ This is very evident with how they treat their employees and co-op students. I would recommend any student or recent graduate apply for a position at Burnside, as they are a first class engineering company with an incredible team of professionals. Matt and his team made me feel at home and provided me with a phenomenal co-op term.”
