If you can dream it, you can do it!
It was a boyhood dream provoked by travels around the globe that inspired Rob Thorburn, a retired executive and owner of Scenic Caves Nature Adventures, to build a suspension footbridge spanning the Georgian Bay coastline.
"To accomplish my goals I looked at numerous bridge builders and settled on Burnside as they embraced the vision, understood my distinct needs and were appreciative of the necessity for the bridge to harmonize with nature. I also needed an engineering company that was entrepreneurial, as a project like this is not common. The bridge components and engineering design were to be unique."
In the news Construction activities required creativity and ingenuity due to limited site access and to project scale. Workers were transported on tractors through dense woods; harrowing truck rides were frequently made up and down the mountain edge; and, skilled archers aimed high and long across the valley in order to secure the first few cables spanning the towers. Following several months of construction, the bridge was completed on time for its grand opening.
"When I look back at the task, I am very impressed with the team work led by Burnside. They, along with the contractor Owen King Ltd. and numerous regulating bodies, achieved my desires and wishes. It was a team effort; our very own 'Stanley Cup.'"
The bridge is not a disappointment. High above the Earths floor it takes you to a place you couldnt otherwise travel. This bridge is the longest suspension footbridge in Ontario and the fourth longest suspension bridge in North America. Congratulations to Mr. Thorburn on the realization of his dream and to Scenic Caves Nature Adventure on their most recent attraction.
Most impressive features:
- Longest suspension footbridge in Ontario (126 metres)
- More than 300 metres above Georgian Bay and 25 metres above the valley floor
- Constructed with 1008 metres of boards and 21225 bolts
- Supported by two 11.5 metre steel towers, attached to stay anchors embedded in 40-cubic metre foundations
- View encompasses over 10,000 square kilometres
